Auditory-Vocal and Visual-Gestural Languages

We cannot but admit that language is a cognitive system. That is, language exists only insofar as people who use a particular language have a set of grammatical rules for it in their heads.
However, it isn’t enough to say merely that we have grammatical rules in our heads. In order for language to be a system of communication—a system that allows us to share our thoughts with others—we have to be able to use it to transmit messages. We must be able to use those grammatical rules to produce something in the world: something that others are able to perceive and interpret. Therefore, every language must have a modality or a mode of communication.
A language’s modality tells us two things: how it is produced, and how it is perceived.

It is likely that most of the languages with which you are familiar are auditory- vocal (sometimes also called aural-oral), which means that they are perceived via hearing and produced via speech. Auditory-vocal languages include English, Russian, Portuguese, Navajo, Korean, and Swahili, among many others. Auditory- vocal languages may also be referred to as spoken languages. Throughout history, there has been a commonly held—though entirely incorrect—view that language is one and the same as speech. This misconception is often spread when the terms speech and language are used interchangeably. From this confusion, people may conclude that only spoken languages may properly be described as being languages.

[Note: This is an extract from a Part 1 text about Driving in Britain.]

In the winter, plummeting temperatures coupled with a notoriously high likelihood of rain cause traffic chaos in Britain. When rainwater gathers and freezes on the road’s surface, it creates a layer of ice that makes driving extremely dangerous. The Highway Code warns drivers that when
it rains, stopping distances are double what they would be on dry roads. On the ice, this stopping distance is tenfold greater. Similarly, in heavy snow, most vehicles struggle to grip adequately, making steering and braking less controlled, which results in road crashes and skidding. The 1980 Highways Act was amended in 2003 to make local councils legally responsible for keeping their roads clear.

Questions 1 – 3
Complete the notes below with words from the passage.
Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS for each answer.

ATTENTION: ROAD SAFETY

Please review the following road safety precautions for icy weather:

  • Before driving, make sure your windows and mirrors are properly defrosted to allow for full visibility.
  • Be aware that stopping distances increase 1._________ when driving on ice.
  • In heavy snow, reduced ability to grip creates a lack of control on roads, which can lead to 2._________, and an increased risk of collision.
  • Ensure that your roads are safe. Local governments are 3._________ to keep their roads free of ice and snow.
